I remember falling in the snow others to hungry to look back nor care, not being able to let out a howl as a warning that I’m down. The scavengers hovering above me there gaze always mocking.
Then I remember you. . . never looking back as my crimson blood stained the snow, you were my brother, out of all I thought you would care but I was wrong you had tricked me this whole time, you ignored my bones grinding because I had no muscle on my body.
I remember you stopping as you past by me, you looked me strait in the eyes and I asked, “End it all.”
But you didn’t. You just twitched you head from side to side and left. Forever and always. When the first vulture pierced my skin trying to get what little nutrition they could. I closed my eyes forever.
Thats when I saw the laughing corpse, it recited, “Do you remember?” as it did to many of my pack before me.
“Yes, I remember everything,” I replied.
“Would you like to get back at everyone that’s done you wrong?” he cackled.
“Yes,” I whined in my throat.
And then I found myself looking down at you. And I just walked away as you struggled to call out through the crimson saliva streaming from your mouth. I walked and walked feeling the heavy burdon of my choice, food disintegrated in my mouth and water turned to sand. And as I sat under a tree a voice interrupted my silence.
“Life’s not fair is it, for you see when you fell, your brother was blind and deaf. He couldn’t hear you only smell you, ”the vulture cackled as it flew away, “but I have a feast to go to now, young wolf.”
That’s when I ran, I ran and ran until my lungs burned and my feet bled. When I got there I scared away as many blood thirsty scavengers and then I realized that he was dead. All I could do was sit there and think about what the scavenger said, ‘blind? deaf?’ How could this happen, I let him down. Now I walk the earth in shadow wishing I had let the snow cover my features forever. Wishing that my brother does not fall for the trick of the laughing corpse.
